Fynbos Trails. Horse riding trails & tours in the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa

These horse trails are designed for those who want to spend time in the Western Cape Winelands with a difference. We give our guests the opportunity to travel to a number of wine farms on horseback, stopping to enjoy tasting the various wines en-route. Alternatively, we can focus on the fynbos and scenery and spend more time in the foothills of the Limietberg Mountains. Either way you will experience the beauty and the wonder of the Cape Winelands.

WE USE ENGLISH SADDLES, NOT WESTERN, SO RIDERS ON LONG TRAILS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THE RISING TROT

Full Day Trails:

Wine Tasting Trail

We leave the stables at 08h30 and ride through the vineyards of two historic wine farms. Guests then have the opportunity to indulge in some wine tasting at two old Huguenot farms. The ride continues through the local vineyards for wine, olive and olive oil tasting at Klein Rhebokskloof; a boutique wine and olive estate. We stop for a light lunch in the middle of the day to give riders and horses a break during the hottest period. The ride continues through the vineyards and olive orchards back to the starting point at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate in the late afternoon.

Wine and Fynbos Trail

We leave the stables at 08h30 and take a picturesque route through the vineyards and across some scenic farms. Guests then have the opportunity to indulge in some wine, olive and olive tasting at one or two of the local estates. We stop for a light lunch, at a local estate. We then ride on into the foothills of the Limietberg Mountains and ride through the local fynbos on the return journey. The ride returns to the stables at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate in the late afternoon.

Full day trail - 6-7 hours riding

A) The 4 hour scenic ride described in A above, a lunch stop at Seasons Restaurant followed by a 2 and a half hour scenic ride in a different direction.

B) A full day ride through the wine farms with 2 tastings at the estates mentioned in B and lunch at either Doolhof or Oude Wellington (R20pp per tasting extra. No charge for holding horses)

All lunches a la carte and wine tasting at Diemersfontein optional after lunch

Half Day Trails / Short Trails:

One to three hour trails

A one to three hour scenic trail with stunning views through the Diemersfontein Estate vineyards to neighbouring farms through vine and herb plantations, fynbos and olive groves against the mountain slopes.

NOVICES SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT MORE THAN 1-2 HOURS. Walk, trot and canter will be done with those that are able to. A wine tasting can be fitted in along the way (R20 – R25 pp per tasting, R90pp per hour to hold horses added to riding time)

Four hour (half day) Trail

FOR RIDING FIT, EXPERIENCED RIDERS ONLY

(Walk, trot and canter will be done)

A) A circular scenic ride through the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains past vineyards, olive groves, herb plantations to a waterfall at Cascade Manor and back.

B) A scenic wine tasting ride through the wine farms with one tasting at either Doolhof Wine Estate, Welvanpas, Dunstone or Bosman Family Vineyards depending on availability or choice of riders. (R20pp extra for tasting, R90pp to hold horses)

Participation in trails and tours is at your own risk. Fynbos Trails, its proprietor, employees and agents will not be held responsible for and shall be exempt from all liability in respect of any loss, damage, theft, injury, accident or loss sustained by any person or their property.

Riding guests should be experienced horse riders and should be riding fit. (Riders should be confident at the rising trot and canter and able to cope with long hours in the saddle.) Novices are welcome on trails of up to a maximum of 2 hours long.

All trails and tours are organised and scheduled on request. Please book all trails and tours at least seven days in advance.
